Why removal is important
If your home was built before 1990, most likely it will contain some type of asbestos product. In the early days many waterproofing membranes had some presence of asbestos.
Asbestos comes in many forms and just looking at something in your property will not tell you if it contains asbestos or not. To know whether your property is infected with asbestos, you will need to have it tested. It can appear in the ceilings, cladding, insulation, flooring, roofing and many other parts of your property.
Unfortunately, asbestos in your home or property can quickly become dangerous if it is disturbed.
How can this happen?
There are many things that can disturb asbestos from simple maintenance work to renovation or demolition work, fire, flood or some other kind of damage.
Why remove asbestos?
Asbestos that is disturbed while renovating or maintaining your property or is just in a deteriorating state has the potential to release deadly fibres, putting everyone at risk of exposure.
There are different levels to asbestos contamination, and this is reflected in the two types of licenses provided to manage and remove it.
Class A
For any type or quantity of asbestos or ACM, including any amount of: friable asbestos or ACM, asbestos-contaminated dust or debris (ACD), non-friable asbestos or ACM.
Class B
For over 10 m2 (cumulatively, over the whole course of the site’s removal project) of non-friable asbestos or ACM, ACD associated with removing over 10 m2 (cumulatively, over the whole course of the site’s removal project) of non-friable asbestos or ACM.
The Health & Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016 requires the identification and management of Asbestos in the Workplace through a compliant management plan.
